Golden Joystick Awards 2011

With over 2 millions votes cast across various different categories, the organisers-and folk over at the Guinness World Records-claim this to be the biggest video games award ceremony on the planet.

This was the Golden Joystick Awards 29th Ceremony and it was Valve’s Portal 2 that was crowned ‘ultimate game of the year’ – beating the likes of LA Noire, Call Of Duty: Black Ops and Gran Turismo 5 to the top spot.

No game was awarded more than one award this time, but check out this list below to see the winners of each category.

  • Ultimate GOTY: Portal 2
  • One to watch: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Best Shooter: Call Of Duty: Black Ops
  • Sports: Fifa 11
  • Racing: Gran Turismo 5
  • Fighting: Mortal Kombat
  • Strategy: Starcraft II
  • MMORPG: World Of Warcraft: Cataclysm
  • RPG: Fallout: New Vegas
  • Action/Adventure: Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
  • Music: GH: Warriors of Rock
  • Free-To-Play: League of Legends
  • Mobile: Angry Birds Rio
  • Downloadable: Minecraft
  • Outstanding Contribution: Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Best Innovation: Nintendo 3DS

The significant award which really stood out was the ‘one to watch’ award, which went to the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim –  great news for the people at Bethesda ahead of Skyrim’s release next month.

Best sports game saw Fifa out-do its rival Pro Evo and GT5 also picked up best racing game, with Dirt 3 as the runner-up and NFS: Hot pursuit taken 3rd place.

Best downloadable game went to Minecraft, which was released back in 2009 for PC but will soon be headed onto Xbox Live for use with the Kinect hardware. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm claimed best MMORPG-no surprise really-selling almost 5 millions copies in its first month of release (wowzers).

Good old Sonic the Hedgehog also won an award for making an outstanding contribution to the gaming industry since his creation 20 years ago, bless.
