GTA III – 10th Anniversary (Coming to iOS and Android devices near you)
It’s true and now official: The world’s number one and everyone’s favourite crime simulator series hits handheld devices this fall!
After writing about Nintendo’s 15th Anniversary last week and finding it hard to believe it was in fact 15 years ago I picked up the N64. I’m having a bit of deja-vu writing this piece.
This is because im finding it equally as hard to believe that it was 10 years ago that Rockstar released the first ever 3D version of its Grand Theft Auto series, Grand Theft Auto 3.
I can still remember how much I was looking forward to playing GTA in 3D and no longer having to play it from a birds-eye camera view. All the preview sections in game magazines informing us 14 year olds (at the time) that in GTA 3 it would be possible to pick up prostitutes and also fly a plane, added to the overall excitement of this games release back in 2001 for the Playstation 2. No-one can deny the sheer enjoyment of picking up a prostitute (which recharged your health bar), spending some time with her in the bushes and then running her over in your car to get your money back, it was great fun.
10 years later, marking its 10 year anniversary, Rockstar have announced at the New York Comic Con that the open world action title, will be remade and released on specific iOS and Android devices later this fall (October 22nd). GTA 3 will be available for the iPad 2, iPhone 4S and the following Android devices: Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, HTC Evo 2, Droid X2, Motorolla Atrix, Motorolla Xoom, LG Optimus 2X, Acer Iconia and the Asus Eee Pad. Happy days if you own any of the following devices listed above.
The developers have also revamped a lot of things for the release, including character models (characters no longer have cubes for hands – they have actual hands with fingers), improved HD graphics and new lighting effects, these will all be packed into the mobile version of GTA 3, so its going to look pretty sweet.
No final words on prices have been spoken about yet, but I can only assume it will be around the £5.99-6.99 mark here in the UK.
Along with release of the mobile version of the game, Rockstar are also releasing a collectible, fully articulated figurine of Claude – the previously unnamed main character in GTA3. The collectible figure-which comes with a stand and many accessories-will be sold for around $150 (MSRP) in the US, which probably means it will retail for around £100 here in the UK.
These will be available (limited quantity) to buy directly from the Rockstar Warehouse website. If you don’t fancy splashing out on the figure then you are in luck as Rockstar are giving a few of these away to members of the Social Club. Heres what they said on their website..
”This fully articulated 1:6 scale action figure of Claude comes dressed in his original attire of cargo pants and a bomber jacket, but he can also sport his iconic Liberty City Prison-issued jumpsuit (supplied). The Claude figure comes equipped with an arsenal of classic weapons from Grand Theft Auto III including a bat, knife, grenades, pistol, sniper rifle, and assault rifle.
This rare and valuable collectors’ item (created by renowned collectible manufacturer, Sideshow) MSRPs for $149.99 and will be offered for pre-order in limited quantities at the Rockstar Warehouse soon, but for now Social Club members have the exclusive opportunity to nick one for free. Social Club members, simply fill out the entry form between now and the end of day this Sunday October 16th. Three lucky winners will be announced next week.”
If you are or are not a Social Club member, you can use this link to log-in or sign up for the competition. Probably no chance of winning, but you’ve gotta be in it to win it as they say.
I will post a few gameplay videos from YouTube on iTech once the mobile version of GTA 3 releases. However I wont be reviewing it personally (unless I get a shot of a friends version or maybe get my hands on one in a phone shop) as I don’t have any iOS or Android device any longer, sad face. On the plus side I am able to play GTA IV on Xbox 360 and all the GTA’s on my PSP, so this isn’t a great loss for me.
Stay tuned to iTech for more GTA 3: Mobile news and videos.
Rockstar have just released a nice little trailer of the 10th Anniversary Edition (Video from IGN YouTube)…
